Mumbai University announces exam dates, principals fear repeat of last year's chaos

MUMBAI: Mumbai Universityfinally announced the commencement dates of the upcoming semester-end exams on Friday. Students, however, will have to wait for a few more days for the exam schedule. The commencement dates were approved in the Board of Examinations (BoE) meeting on Friday.

While some college principals have complained about the lack of planning that has gone into deciding the exam dates, many believe that the assessment of papers will run into the summer vacation and will impact the announcement of results yet again.

A university official said that the BoE has managed to keep the exam dates similar to that of last year. "The final semester for TYB Com exams - considered to be taken by the largest number of students (over 80,000) - commences on April 3. By the time it ends in the second week of April, we have scheduled the first-year exams. Teachers will have to start the assessment work immediately after the TYB Com exams are over to ensure there are no delays," said the official. The dates for engineering exams are yet to be announced.

Principals and teachers, however, are not convinced with the schedule. "The policy of having a uniform time-table for first and second year exams across colleges will continue to have an adverse impact on the final exam results. Teachers will be busy conducting exams throughout the month of April and to some extent even in May. They are likely to get time for the assessment work only in May, when the vacation begins. We cannot expect them to work throughout the year without breaks," said a principal.

Prior to 2016-17, colleges completed their first and second year exams by March third week and they focused only the university exams that commenced in April. Despite requests from several principals to decentralize the exams for first and second year, the university decided to continue with it.

Another principal pointed out that the university has not yet taken any punitive action against colleges whose teachers do not participate in the assessment process. "With no action against such teachers and colleges, they will continue to skip assessment work delaying the process. Papers are yet to be assessed in law and post graduate exams. All this together is likely to delay the results yet again and impact next year's admission season too," said the principal.

A teacher said, "We were expecting the cascading effect of last year's chaos to continue for two to three exams, but the university needs to take serious efforts to contain it. We can see lack of proper planning in deciding the exam dates. There are printing errors in the commencement dates released by the university. According to the schedule, a couple of exams are scheduled on March 4 and one exam is even in April. Such goof-ups could have been avoided."
