Mumbai University’s distance learning centre fails to
find a spot on UGC list |

The Mumbai University’s Institute of Distance and Open
Learning (IDOL) is not on the revised list of recognised distance learning
institutes released by the Universities Grant Commission. The said IDOL’s
recognition was under review by an expert committee. In August last year, IDOL
was left out from a list of institutes recognised to give distance learning
courses. This was a result of lack of A grade from the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council since April 2017. The institute was asked to submit a
proposal to continue running such courses, which was to be reviewed by a
committee.
However, IDOL was left out in the updated list of
recognised institutes published on December 31. A public notice stated that the
proposal from the will be further assessed through expert committee visits.
Other institutes in a similar situation include MATS University and Sikkim
Manipal University. An official from IDOL said, “The fresh proposal was
submitted to the UGC on October 5, 2018. The UGC’s letter says there would be
expert committee visits, which means the recognition process is ongoing.” IDOL
sees an annual enrolment of nearly 70,000 students. Tnn
