Incubation centre inaugurated at Mumbai

With
an aim to foster innovative ideas and research that could generate more
technology patents and give rise to start-ups, the University of Mumbai on
Wednesday opened its very first incubation centre for students and faculty. The
centre, located at the Green Technology building at Kalina campus, was
inaugurated by Nobel laureate Sir Richard John Roberts, who is in the city to
preside over the varsity’s convocation function as the chief guest on Friday.
The university has received a Rs 5 crore grant from the Maharashtra State
Innovative Society for the centre. “This centre will stress on the process
development in the niche areas and design products in specific applications. It
will create a rightful eco-system for the students and faculty to transcend
ideas into start-up companies. Use of hub and spoke model to promote cross
networking amongst affiliated colleges, University and collaborators,” a
university press note said. The university has identified some sectors for
research and innovation, namely renewable energy, ESDM (electronic system
design and manufacturing) and semiconductor devices, polymers and magnetic
materials, bio technology, e-commerce and retails, artificial intelligence, and
information technology, process intensifications, stimulation and optimisation.
